Gov. McAuliffe talks about Charlottesville violence on CBS This Morning

Memorials have been removed in many US locations as a safety measure against potential protests from white supremacist groups (and those who oppose them) after the deadly white supremacist rally in Chartlottesville, Virginia on the weekend.

A monument honoring the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, was installed in a nearby location in 1926 but, objections raised by veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic caused it to be removed.

Our current contentious debate about removing statues goes back to the 2015 mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

Criticism of Confederate monuments has been intensifying since Saturday, when a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned violent after white nationalists opposed to the city's plan to remove a statue of Lee clashed with counter protesters.

While Trump condemned the neo-Nazi and white supremacists who protested, he insisted there were "very fine people" among those protesting the removal of Lee's statue in Charlottesville.

There is an important distinction to be made between remembering history and trying to revive it. There also is a distinction between famous warriors and famous patriots.

Officials from big cities, such as Los Angeles and New York, to smaller towns, such as Gainesville, Fla., and Stone Mountain, Ga., have all moved to take down or change locations of monuments celebrating the confederacy following the violence in Virginia. Americans probably do not believe they are racist for wanting the statues to remain in place.

Perhaps the most famous example of a monument's removal for political reasons was the spectacular toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue in Firdos Square in Baghdad in 2003. Everyone who was there, the people did the right thing. "They are not just innocent remembrances of a benign history", Landrieu wrote.

The group is seeking the removal of 13 statues in the city, including the equestrian monument to Andrew Jackson in Jackson Square.

"We will never solve America's race problem if we continue to honor traitors who fought against the United States in order to keep African Americans in chains", Democratic Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana told ABC News.

That same year, then-South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley successfully led calls to bring down a Confederate flag that had flown on Statehouse grounds for 54 years.

"I thought it was the right way to do it", she said.

A spokesman for Republican U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan said it was up to U.S. states to determine which statues were displayed on their behalf in the Capitol building. "There literally is no difference between the two men". Many of them went west, to work the mines, or work the railroads, and get rich, or, at least, less poor.

Popular Video This young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. Later in the evening, the city of Franklin said the monument was actually under its control, as it fell within the right-of-way for Dixie Highway, which is owned by the city. He notes that Birmingham didn't even exist during the Civil War- it wasn't established until 1871 during post Civil War reconstruction. Hogan noted that the statue sends the wrong message about the country's past.

But Goodman said some people might be willing to take a chance. Robert E. Lee also married Mary Custis Lee, the daughter of Washington's adopted son, George Washington Parke Custis.

On Monday, protesters gathered in favor of removing a statue of Civil War officer John B. Castleman from Louisville, Kentucky.
