Why North Korea is talking up Guam — Raising the stakes

While there are other countries like India, Pakistan also in possession of nuclear weapon, the difference in the case of North Korea is that this country now remains largely isolated except with it's close contact with China. I don't want to live in a world in which a nuclear-tipped North Korean missile can hit Guam or Hawaii or Los Angeles or Chicago, but we may not have a choice.

Both North Korea and the US have ramped up their already bellicose rhetoric in the past week, with North Korea saying it is considering missile strikes near US strategic military installations on the Pacific island of Guam, and US President Donald Trump threatening to bring down "fire and fury" in response.

WASHINGTON This is what we dreaded.

For a military operation that sober-minded people believe could, at the outer bounds of its destructiveness, cause more than a million casualties, the president should probably get authorization from Congress - when it's not obvious that Congress can even pass a budget. He is not going to give those up, no matter what the international community might say or do. If Congress does jump in, it's worth asking why they are doing it for THIS president.

It's an existential question for this tiny territory currently caught between President Trump and North Korea. More and more Koreans living there have access to portable DVD players and cell phones, which are tools to break the state's control over the minds of their citizens.

Though Trump is taking a very hard-line approach, at least in his rhetoric, growing concerns over Kim Jong Un's accelerated missile launches have added strength to the camp in the United States calling for a diplomatic resolution.

It highlights an interesting feature of South Korea, a strong U.S. ally, trading partner and fellow democracy where there can seem to be as much, maybe more, worry about Trump's unpredictable style of leadership as there is about archrival North Korea.

"The US has no interest in regime change or accelerated reunification of Korea".

"If you want my advice, get off Twitter and go to dinner", Jeffrey Lewis, an expert on North Korea's nuclear programme, wrote on Twitter as social media panic grew.

"The provocative 'preventive war' the U.S. has devised and plans to execute will be countered with a just all-out war of wiping out all the strongholds of the enemies including the U.S. mainland".

During the Cold War, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev repeatedly threatened to seize West Berlin. The finance minister had suggested, last week, a significant cut of 9.7-billion U.S. dollars in government expenditure, 2 billion dollars more than initially planned.

Although the White House statement on the call was notoriously lacking in detail, the Republican governor posted a video of his end of the call, providing a unique glimpse in how Trump talks to other leaders.

"In the event of a nuclear attack against the United States it would be different", Markey said on MSNBC. The process involves shielding a nuclear warhead from the high temperatures and force it faces when it re-enters the Earth's atmosphere at about 15,500 mph (7 kilometers a second).

Analysts said Kim was trying to tamp down skyrocketing tensions that have generated the most serious crisis on the divided peninsula in years.

"The chances of a missile getting through the various layers of defence, both of US military and our allies, is 0.000001 percent", said Charfauros.

CIA director Mike Pompeo and HR McMaster, Donald Trump's national security adviser, tried to provide assurances that a conflict is avoidable, while also supporting the president's tough talk. Pyongyang says it will be ready to send its missile launch plan to Kim for approval just before or as the drills begin. The prospect of a military confrontation is too horrific.

Guam officials were "ecstatic" on Tuesday as North Korea appeared to back away from its threat to fire four missiles towards the US territory in the western Pacific. His default mindset is not only indifferent to these traits; it is antithetical to them.

A PAC-3 interceptor is deployed in the compound of a garrison of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in Konan, Kochi prefecture, Japan, on Saturday. This is extremely getting on the nerves of the infuriated Hwasong artillerymen of the KPA (Korean People's Army).

Life on the streets of the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, also remained calm.
