Spanish police: 12 attackers didn't have known terror ties

People flee the scene in Barcelona Spain Thursday Aug. 17 2017 after a white van jumped the sidewalk in the historic Las Ramblas district crashing into a summer crowd of residents and tourists

Neighbours who watched them grow up in the quiet mountain town of Ripoll, set beneath the Pyrenees and ringed by forested hills, said they showed no sign of radicalisation. "They were good boys". Very few people come to pray.

"The executor of the stabbing operation in the city of Surgut in Russia is a soldier of the Islamic State", Amaq said.

Josep Lluis Trapero, a senior police official with regional Catalan police, implied that the explosives that demolished the house would have likely been used in an attack.

Abouyaaqoud's mother took part in a rally at Ripoll town hall square on Saturday and said she repudiated the attacks, asking her son to turn himself in.

The Sun reported Sunday that it obtained exclusive photos of Abouyaaqoub's modest apartment after it was searched by cops.

The explosion was also in the town of Alcanar, in the early hours of Thursday.

The driver abandoned the van and fled on Thursday after speeding along a section of Las Ramblas, the most famous boulevard in Barcelona, leaving a trail of dead and injured among the crowds of tourists and local residents thronging the street.

Police initially targeted Oukabir as the central figure behind the attack, but now believe Abouyaaqoub is their main suspect. Police said they were searching for a fourth suspect, Younes Abouyaaqoub, aged 22.

"I think that Spain will know how to handle this and will separate the culprits from the rest so a xenophobic message does not prosper", he said. Catalonia resident Teresa Rodriguez said she had turned up to pray for the victims. He had not seen Es Satty since July. She told La Vanguardia newspaper: "He didn't like attention". They never showed any signs of radicalisation, he said.

Throughout Europe, authorities have been forced to weigh up protecting the public with changing the face and infrastructure of their cities because of the spectre of terrorism.

"Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration".

The man at large was driving the van that hit victims on Las Ramblas, Trapero said.

"It will never be the same".

Police say the group were planning a mass-scale atrocity involving three rented vans packed with plastic explosives and 120 butane gas canisters.

Catalan authoritites have confirmed that one of the victims killed on Las Ramblas was British-Australian seven-year-old Julian Cadman. Paramedics and bystanders bent over them, treating them and trying to comfort those still conscious.

Across the Pyrenees, French police carried out extra border checks on people coming from Spain. Those who stand on the side of peace cannot allow these forces to endanger our cherished values of democracy and freedom.

There were also flowers in vases, two simple wooden coffee tables and a flat-screen TV inside the home, the paper reported.

He added: "Be tough & strong, we love you!" They also said they had arrested four suspects - three Moroccans and a Spaniard.
