The numbers that explain this week's stock market crash

Traders worked the stock exchange floor Monday as the Dow saw a historic points drop

U.S. stocks were in a tailspin again yesterday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) dropping more than 1,000 points in its steepest one-day loss ever.

That was a particularly bad year for the Dow Jones and global markets in general - a total of four days from 2008 feature in the list of the Dow Jones' 20 worst days.

On Monday, the Dow declined 1,175 points, or 4.6%, to 24,346, while the S&P 500 fell 4.1% and the Nasdaq Composite 3.8%. Market volatility, which has been historically low in recent months, spiked, with the Cboe Volatility Index, commonly considered a gauge of investor fear, jumping by more than 100 percent.

James Bateman, the chief investment officer for multi-asset at Fidelity International, is bouyed by the movements.

"People who are investing for the long term this is just a blip and frankly it might be a great opportunity to be buying some things call your financial advisor and discuss it", said Stern. But the market is probably closer to where investors can buy rather than sell, he said.

That brought relief to markets after a global sell-off began last week. A spokesperson told News10NBC that the fund was well-positioned to weather any ups and downs in the stock market.

The Dow posted a 2.3 percent increase, its biggest daily percentage gain since Jan. 29, 2016, while the S&P 500 rose 1.7 percent, its biggest one-day gain since Nov. 7, 2016, the day before the election of Donald Trump as president.

Read Monday's full edition of The Point. The fact that Republicans, members of the party that supposedly cares most about deficits, would add to the problem with $1.5 trillion in new borrowing over the next decade is unlikely to instill much confidence.

U.S. stocks swooned Friday and Monday as investors worried that accelerating inflation and higher interest rates could derail the market's record-setting rally.

On Tuesday morning, Japan's Nikkei index plunged 4 per cent while the S&P/ASX 200 in Australia dropped 3 per cent.

U.S. stocks shot higher in afternoon trading as the market looks to recover from its biggest loss in 6 ½ years.

The reality is the stock market is so highly valued that we are going to have a correction, which means values will drop 10%.

The treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, said he was not "overly concerned about the market volatility".

Analysts say that in the short term, investors should be prepared for choppier stock markets, but doubt whether there will be a prolonged period of selling.

After Monday's selloff, News10NBC reached out to the Comptroller's office.
